Mad Barn’s bulk Chasteberry powder is an herbal remedy used to support hormone balance and normal pituitary gland function. Chasteberry extract comes from the fruit and seeds of the chaste tree, also known as Vitex Agnus-Castus. This supplement is commonly given to horses to promote mood balance, healthy coats, and to support normal hormone regulation in senior horses.
It is sometimes used to provide nutritional support to horses with Equine Cushing’s Disease (PPID) and Insulin Resistance. It has been studied as an alternative to pergolide mesylate. It is also used in easy keepers and horses with cresty necks and atypical fat deposits. In traditional medicine systems, Chasteberry powder has long been used as an adaptogen, believed to support homeostasis and reduce stress in a wide range of physiological systems. Anecdotally, this plant is said to calm moody mares and aggressive males. Research shows that chasteberry extract influences the activity of the neurotransmitter dopamine and the endocrine system. Chasteberry may also support healthy progesterone levels and fertility in mares.
It appears to work by modulating the secretion of sex hormones from the pituitary gland. It is believed to affect production of luteinizing hormone (LH), Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and to decrease levels of prolactin when they are elevated. Chasteberry is also said to influence glucose metabolism, anti-inflammatory pathways, joint pain, shedding, hydration, kidney function, digestive health, top line, muscle development and overall appearance in horses. More research is needed to evaluate many of the claims made regarding this supplement.
